Renault Duster: The Aptly Priced Monster

Next

After much delay Renault’s Duster has finally arrived in India. This Sports Utility Vehicle comes in eight different variants, including two petrol and six diesel variants. The tall front hood, double-optic headlamps, fogs and chrome grill gives Duster an intimidating muscular look that SUV fanatics would love. Also the 205 mm ground clearance together with its 30 degree approach angle and 35 degree departure angle suggests this SUV might actually come with a reasonably good off-road performance capability as well. Let us go through some vital details of Duster.
The two 1598cc petrol models provide 104 PS at 5850 RPM, while the 1461cc diesel model comes in two power levels; an 85 PS model and a 110 PS model. Its 4 cylinder in-line engine offers refined all round performance. Its high torque at low RPM makes it apt for city drive as well. The smaller size in similar class has its advantages and negligible disadvantages. With lesser weight the car offers a much nimbler performance and superior mileage. Overall length of Duster is 4315 mm, overall width is 1822 mm, overall height is at 1695 mm, wheelbase stands at 2673 mm, and 1760 kg gross weight. It offers 475 litres of trunk capacity and 1064 litres when rear seats are folded. With a maximum turning radius of just 5.2 meters Duster can really handle the corners very well.
Hydraulically operated diagonal split dual circuit braking system with ventilated disks in front and drums in the rear offers optimum braking ability for the SUV. Its independent McPherson Strut suspension with coil springs and anti-roll bar in the front and torsion beam axle with coil springs and anti-roll bar in the rear along with the 215/65 R16 tubeless tires and 16 inch steel wheels offers great stability to the vehicle. The electro hydraulic power assisted steering helps enhance the performance of the car and augment its off-roading capabilities.
Engine immobiliser, two tone coloured bumpers, keyless entry, tilt steering column, engine protective under guard, and central locking are all standard throughout models. Dual-Airbags in the front come optional while ABS, EBD and brake assist comes standard in high-end variants. Rear de-fogger and front fog lamps are standard in the high-end variants. Transmission is manual in all variants with the petrol and the 85 PS diesel models featuring 5 speed gear boxes and rest of them sporting a 6 speed one. Petrol models come with multi-point fuel injection systems while the diesel models have common rail direct injection fuel systems.
The 8 way adjustable driver seat improves the seating comfort of the driver while decreasing the chance of fatigue thus increasing the overall safety of the vehicle. The adjustable steering wheels also compliment your driving pleasure thus making even long drives fun. There is rear AC vents with independent controls for rear seat passengers. On a negative note, the dash board, panels and equipment in the car, especially the base model looks a bit dated. Also the leg room in the rear seats are not that great, but let us not forget that they never are in most SUVs.
Finally coming to the most impressive part of the package- the price, Duster is priced between Rs. 7.19 lakhs and Rs. 11.29 lakhs. This has to be the most impressive SUV in this price group. The vehicle is available in brown, red, white, silver, black and grey colours.

Alternative rides: Mahindra XUV 5OO, TATA Safari, Mahindra Scorpio
