Spirit of Nationalism: India Awakened!?

As India celebrates its 65th year of independence, it has seen a series of revolutionary changes in the past century. As the decades moved forth at a slow and steady pace, India had already covered and reached several milestones in various fields which make us proud about the nation we belong to. Finally, at the stroke of midnight, as India moved into August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, read out the famous “Tryst with Destiny” speech proclaiming India’s independence.

The journey towards striving for freedom was indeed a battle that was fought by our brave freedom fighters. India has rejoiced the freedom which was only possible by the efforts of those who laid down their lives for the country. Few of them who were recognized, went into our history text books, while the others went unnoticed. While the whole country was longing for freedom, there were some who were adamant to bring about a change in India and its coming generations. Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, protested against the colonial rule with a non-violence approach. Along with initiating the famous Dandi march, he also put his sincere efforts to uplift the status of the dalits. Rani Lakshmibai, also known as Jhansi ki Rani fought against the East India Company under the leadership of Lord Dalhousie when the Doctrine of Lapse was going to be applied in order to acquire Jhansi. She is still remembered as the figure for women empowerment today. Another movement which was led in order to oppose the British rule was the Swadeshi movement, initiated by Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal, also known as the trio of Lal Bal Pal.

Along with the mission of overthrowing the British rule, they also boycotted the foreign goods that were being sold in the Indian market. Bhagat Singh became another prominent figure in the history of freedom struggle by throwing a bomb in the Central Legislative Assembly and surrendering himself to the police after the attack. Sardar Vallabhai Patel, fondly known as Iron Man of India was the first deputy Prime Minisiter and an iconic figure in the Quit India Movement. Our Netaji, Subhash Chandra Bose formed the Indian National Army with the involvement of Indians in other parts of Asia to attack the British forces in India. Besides these notable figures, there were others who made significant contributions during the freedom struggle. Freedom fighters like Chandrasekhar Azad, Bagha Jatin, Khudiram Bose, Madan Lal Dhingra, Udham Singh, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Veer Savarkar and Mangal Pandey who made imperative contributions will always be remembered and honoured. All these leaders gave their life for the freedom that we citizens are enjoying today.
Since independence, the literacy rate and economic development showed a tremendous improvement due to the introduction of several schemes by the government. The five year plans emphasized on each sector for their development. We are now in our 11th five year plans (2007-2012) where the main objective is to reduce poverty. As millions prosper, a large section is still left dwindling in the poverty line, undergoing malnutrition and several other atrocities. Also the problems of women empowerment and alleviation of caste system and social evils are still a question that has not been well structured. In reality, India will truly be independent only when it resorts to casting out the demons that still prevail in our country and by instilling a sense of national pride among all the citizens, in India and abroad.
